Alan Fletcher

Alan Fletcher, one of the most well known British Graphic Designers of all time, creating pieces of influential design for the past fifty years. Fletcher is one of the five founders of the group Pentagram, and during his time there worked with a diverse range of clients.

One of Fletchers most renowned publications, contains all the visual prompts and “eye candy” that he has used for inspiration throughout his career.

David Hughes

David Hughes is one of the illustrators who’s webpages actually utilises the site to his advantage in order to broadcast himself and sell his work, although the interactivity could be better, it still is a well designed site with regards to the creativity.

The ink spill on the homepage automatically indicates to a user his area of work and expertise. I continued to look further at his work, which as I was looking through had the same impact on me much like Ian Pollock’s work. It consists of the same edgy and arguably disturbing tendencies.

Hi-Res

First impressions from Hi-Res is that it boasts its globalisation, as it has offices based across the globe, in London, Hamburg, Berlin and New York, already saying a lot about the company with regards to its popularity.

I will be looking into the work it has done for “MTV HiJack!”

Hi-Res state that this video was supposed to be a obscure and play on reality as we know it, and even though I can understand how the idea of using a computer desktop interface can have this impression, as the internet and technology have arguably different realities to that which is outside of technology, I can’t really understand where this (video) would have been used. I imagine that this long video would have been broken up and used as idents whilst the program is showing, or used as the title sequence? I am not too sure.

April Greiman

Recognised as “one of the first designers to recogniser computers as design tools”, Greiman was also partly responsible for the ‘New Wave’ of design style in thw US during the 70s and 80s. Greiman has studied Graphic Design in Kansas and now one of the main figured in the LA based design companies “Made in Space”

When looking over a catalogue of work available, it is evident that Greiman’s “New Wave” influences have found their way into the work of the company.

A couple of examples here of the work that comes out of “Made in Space”. For me, the work is very intriguing, and I like the way the pieces play with text and images in such an abstract way.

Chris Ware

When it comes to notoriety surrounding cartoon and comic book design, Chirs Ware is way up there with many awards supporting his work from multiple years such as the Harvey and Eisner awards. Embedded within all these awards and notoriety is some of his most well known work for the ACME Novelty Library

An example of Ware’s work on “Jimmy Corrigan” – http://romococo.com/litcon/chris-ware/

The image above is another example of Ware’s work. “Jimmy Corrigan, The Smartest Kid on Earth” is a graphic novel which was released in 2000 and within a short space of time had awards backing it up. In 2009 the publication found its way into one of the “100 Best Books of the Decade” by The Times.

This was a piece of work that really caught my eye because it (and i’m not sure what this means) but of Stewie from Family Guy!

Not only this but the 40s and 50s style, layout and typeface is something which I find very nice to look at.

Spike Jonze

The majority of the people included in the blog so far have been about people that mainly illustrate and design, and produce motion video as well as these other areas of media. Spike Jonze is an American screenwriter, director, producer and also has also taken acting roles in certain productions.

Because of his area of work, Jonze has a dedicated page on IMDb, where his motion picture work is summarised as follows. He has directed 39 films, written 13, produced 24 and acted in 16, amongst other work behind the camera in various departments.

His main bulk of work was with the “Jackass” film series, where he wrote and produced all the films within this series.
